Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy Training with Lorrie Brubacher @ St Michael's Lutheran Church
Feb 28 @ 8:30 am – Feb 29 @ 5:00 pm

Lorrie Brubacher will be coming to Minnesota on February 28th and 29th to present Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy!

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) extends Dr. Sue Johnson’s model of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy to work with individuals. EFIT applies attachment theory to help individuals improve their emotional well-being and relationships. Psychotherapy is most effective when it focuses on the healing power of emotional connection. Attachment theory provides proven techniques for treating the two most common presenting problems in individual therapy: anxiety and depression. It provides a practical map for shaping love or secure attachment that positively impacts emotion regulation, social adjustment and mental health (Johnson, 2019). In EFIT, the therapeutic alliance is the heart from which emotion regulation and secure bonds with others and within self are shaped. Clients are helped to discover and validate inner emotional experience that can then be used as a guide for living. Confidence flows from secure connection with others, creating a safe haven and a secure base in the dynamic flow between interpersonal and internal worlds.

The target audience includes mental health providers who provide psychotherapeutic services to individuals. This workshop is most helpful for therapists who have discovered the power of EFT with couples and are looking for guidance on how to apply this deeply transformative approach to working with individuals. Registrants will have attended the EFT Externship previously but please contact Amanda Pikala if you are interested in attending but haven’t taken the Externship.

After this workshop, participants will be able to follow the attachment map to:

    1. Formulate individual presenting problems – depression, anxiety and other problems – within an attachment frame.
    2. Describe the dyadic EFT model of change with individuals.
    3. Apply interventions in the EFT Tango to individual therapy.
    4. Identify coping strategies for engagement / emotion regulation that maintain individual’s presenting problems and assemble emotion in those patterns.
    5. Reprocess emotion and shape new, positive patterns of engagement.
    6. Create corrective emotional experiences moment-to-moment in therapy.

Sue Johnson’s Master Class: April 22nd, 2020 @ St.Paul/Minneapolis Area (Exact location is TBD)
Apr 22 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

A new date for the Master Class: Case Studies with Sue Johnson-Using the Wisdom of EFT to Overcome Clinical Impasses in Couple Therapy Now on Wednesday April 22, 2020.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Sue Johnson, the developer of EFT for couples,  provide consultation to our local therapists on difficult cases.  Join us on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 from 9:00 am to 5 pm, for a once in a life time opportunity of hearing Sue Johnson consult with EFT therapists from our community.

Based on over 30 years of research on adult bonding and empirical studies with thousands of clients, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) has been described as “a revolution in the field of couples therapy” (John Gottman).  This workshop offers you a chance to witness how EFT-cofounder Sue Johnson parses challenging cases in consultation with EFT therapists.

The workshop begins with an update on the latest thinking about EFT, and then moves into the application of EFT with distressed couples using videotapes of real-life sessions.  You will watch Sue work through difficult cases and clinical impasses presented by senior EFT therapists.  Video vignettes of therapists in action and transcripts will provide concrete examples of real-life dilemmas commonly faced by couples therapists.  Experiential exercises will be offered as well as discussion of clinical dilemmas in couple therapy.

You will learn how to identify critical decision-making junctures while therapy is in session, specific techniques that Sue employs in order to facilitate a “corrective emotional experience”, and how to match treatment to your assessment of the couple’s emotional state.

EFT done well looks deceptively simple.  The reality of implementing EFT is often fraught because the kind of attachment rupture that causes couples to seek therapy are visceral in nature and resistant to top-down cognitive interventions.  Couples know there is a better way but they often do not have access to the emotional wiring that will help them manage the legacies of their own attachment histories let alone those of their partners.  Sue Johnson will show and demonstrate ways for you to effectively, safely, and consistently tap into EFT wisdom even when faced with the most challenging couples.
You Will Learn:

  • Clinical applications of EFT research in the field of adult bonding and attachment theory
  • How to conceptualize cases from an EFT perspective
  • How to identify critical junctures in how couples are relating to each other in session and how to leverage these relationship forks in the road for therapeutic benefit
  • Ways to match treatment to an assessment of the couple’s emotional state
  • The characteristics of difficult couples and how to address them
  • Approaches and interventions for difficult couples

This class is meant for those who have taken the EFT Externship.
